Alternative treatment for osteoarthritis


Osteoarthritis is the most common form of arthritis which is also known as degenerative joint disease. Osteoarthritis is caused due to wear and tear on the joints and deterioration of joint cartilage. Cartilage acts like a cushion between bones and helps protects the ends of bones. But, due to cartilage deterioration the bones start to rub against each other, causing a grinding or clicking of the joints, bone damage, pain and inflammation.

Symptoms of osteoarthritis:

- Pain

- Reduced mobility.

- Grinding or clicking in the joints

- Growths (spurs)

- Swollen joints

- Stiffness of joints and pain in the morning or after exercise.

Cold weather and humidity can worsen the symptoms.


Causes of Osteoarthritis:


- Age: It is can occur at any age but, people over 45 are more prone to this disease.

- Family history.


- Suffering from another form of arthritis.

- Injury.


Alternative treatment for osteoarthritis:


- If you are suffering from osteoarthritis then try to make a healthy well balanced diet menu.

- Eat sulphur rich diet because sulphur is beneficial for the joints, some good sources of sulphur are garlic, onion, cabbage and asparagus.

- Include cold-water fish, hemp, flaxseed and olive oil in to your diet menu. These all are good sources of olive essential fatty acids and can help reduce inflammation.

- Try to drink green tea. Green tea is a good source of antioxidant (catechins) which is beneficial in reducing chronic joint inflammation and helps prevent cartilage breakdown.

- Pineapple contains the enzyme bromelain, which can help reduce inflammation.

- Try to avoid foods such as night shade vegetables like tomato, potatoes, peppers, and eggplant because these vegetables are rich in substance called solanine, which can trigger pain and inflammation.

- Avoid trans fatty acids containing foods like processed, fast, and deep-fried foods because these foods can also trigger inflammation and pain.

- Avoid milk, red meat, sugar, alcohol, coffee and refined carbohydrates for your good.

- Acupuncture is also another alternative treatment for osteoarthritis which offers short-term benefits for pain relief.

- Apply ice or heat packs to the affected joints. Heat packs help relax the aching muscles and reduces joint pain. Cold pack is beneficial in reducing inflammation and pain.

- In order to reduce joint strain use assistive devices, such as canes, walkers, and joint supports.

- Avoid activities that put excess strain on the joints such as prolonged standing, jumping, running etc. Take a load off and rest when doing heavy or repeated tasks such as gardening, or doing housework.

- Light massage with botanical oils (camphor, eucalyptus, pine needle, or rosemary) can help reduce pain and promote relaxation
