Alternative treatment for high blood cholesterol
Cholesterol is a yellowish fatty substance which is well known for causing various heart and circulatory system diseases such as heart attack, a stroke or high blood pressure. Around 80 % of cholesterol is produced in the liver and rest 20 % comes form foods. Cholesterol is a building block of the outer membrane of cells. It is the principal ingredient in the digestive juice bile, in the fatty sheaths that insulate nerves and in sex hormones, namely, estrogen and androgen. It performs several functions such as transportation of fat, providing defense mechanism, protecting red blood cells and muscular membrane of the body.
Normal level of cholesterol = 150- 250 mg. per 100 ml.
Persons with atherosclerosis have uniformly high blood cholesterol usually above 250 mg. per 100 ml.
Causes of high blood cholesterol:
Digestive disorders.
Fried foods, excessive consumption of milk and its products like, butter and cream, white flour, sugar, cakes, pastries, biscuits, cheese, ice cream as well as non-vegetarian foods like meat, fish and eggs.
Smoking.
Stress.
Alternative treatment for high blood cholesterol:
- The best alternative treatment for high blood cholesterol is the diet control. A well balanced diet plan helps reduce the risk of heart disease and it is also essential for lowering the level of LDL and at the same time increasing the level of HDL. Therefore, it is necessary to make some changes in to your diet menu.
- Eliminate all high cholesterol and saturated fats such as eggs, organ meats and most cheese, butter, bacon, beef, whole milk, virtually all foods of animal origin from your diet menu. Use polyunsaturated fats such as corn, safflower, soybeans and sesame oils instead of coconut and palm oil. There are mono saturated fats such as olive and peanut oils which have more or less neutral effect on the LDL level.
- Include fiber rich foods such as unprocessed wheat bran, whole cereals such as wheat , rye, rice, barley; legumes such as potato, carrot, beet and turnips; fruits like mango and guava and green vegetables such as cabbage, lady’s finger, lettuce and celery.
- Eat diet, rich in vitamin B6, cholin and inositol such as wheat germ, yeast, or B vitamins extracted from bran have been particularly effective in reducing blood cholesterol.
- Take 10 pieces of cinnamon sticks and put them in a pot containing 5 teacups of water. Boil the water and then add a tablespoon of honey to it. Drink this concoction when it’s warm.
- In a glassful of milk, add a piece of garlic and boil it. Allow it to cool before drinking. Consume this for a few days. Not only would it reduce cholesterol, but also take care of the cardiac pains
- Eat lots of almonds and walnuts. These are helpful in reducing the cholesterol levels.
- Chewing sweet neem is \ beneficial in lowering the high cholesterol levels.
- Having fenugreek seeds and sprouts helps to reduce the high cholesterol levels.
- Try to drink plenty of water. Drink at least eight to ten glasses of water everyday because water is the best natural cleanser that helps eliminate toxins and other waste products from the body.
- Drink coriander water, in order to prepare – boil dry coriander seeds and strain the decoction after cooling.
- Make a regular exercise regimen.

- Steam baths are also helpful except in patients suffering from hypertension and other circulatory disorders.
- Mud packs, applied over the abdomen improve digestion and assimilation. They improve the functioning of the liver and other digestive organs and activate kidneys and the intestines to promote better excretion.
